Scientists Build 1,000 Core Processor, Claim It's 20 Times Faster Than Current Models~
Scottish scientists have built a 1,000-core processor, claiming it will run 20 times faster than today’s chips while using less power.
Dr. Wim Vanderbauwhede led a research team at the University of Glasgow to create the futuristic processor using a programmable chip called a field programmable gate array (FPGA)~
Instead of the built-in circuitry of conventional desktop computer chips, these processors can be customized. So with some extremely clever programming, the research team was able to divide the processor into 1,000 cores, each capable of its own computation~
To give you some perspective, the fastest consumer processors such as Intel’s Core i7 top out at six cores. According to the Daily Mail, the 1,000-core processor processes 5 gigabytes data per second, and that’s “20 times faster than modern computers.”~

Iron Man ode to Grey Fox~
The Hot Toys 10th Anniversary Exhibition took place over the last few days in Tokyo. One attraction of the show was customized Iron Man figures. Influences ranged from Bruce Lee to NASA astronauts, but the showstopper was an ode to Grey Fox (AKA Cyborg Ninja [AKA Frank Jaeger]) of Metal Gear fame. Who would win in a fight between Iron Man and Grey Fox? I guess it comes down to jets and hand cannons versus optical camouflage and an electrified katana~

Pink Sweets & Muchi Muchi Pork out 2/24/11 (in Japan)~
Those Japanese bastards. They get the robot servants and all the good games. Cave’s Xbox 360 double-pack of two bullet-hell arcade ports will be hitting shelves around the Land of the Rising Sun on February 24, 2011~
Muchi Muchi Pork is awesome because it features well-endowed girls in pig suits riding flying motorcycles. Pink Sweets is awesome because it is so damn difficult that it might just kill you in real life. Watch the strangely extensive announcement above for some gameplay footage of both games~
I wouldn’t expect this to be a region-free release, but there’s always room for wishful thinking… or for stealing $300 from an old lady so I can finally buy a Japanese 360. She deserved it anyway~

High-speed camera shooting FROM a train~
Graeme Taylor shot out the window of a train at 210 frames per second, reversing the usual trick of shooting and slowing down a high-speed object from a stationary spot; rather, he shot a stationary spot from a high-speed object. The effect is something like a mundane bullet-time, where the world has stopped so that no one can do anything much of anything. It's mesmerizing~
"The 'trick' is the camera collects images at a rate of 210 per second - but the film is played back at 30 frames per second."~

Microsoft developing touchscreens that shape-shift into keyboards~
There's just no good way to simulate a real keyboard with a touchscreen, no matter what Acer wants us to think. Microsoft is working on a new technology that can turn touchscreens into shape-shifting keyboards with keys you can actually feel~
A new patent from Microsoft describes how little cells made out of shape-memory plastic can be used on top of a regular touchscreen to create textures. The cells are about the same size as the pixels in the display underneath, and when they get exposed to a specific wavelength of UV light, they stick up. Make them stick up in a grid pattern, and there you go, instant physical keyboard~
This kind of thing is good for way more than keyboards, too. Imagine all of the gestures that you currently use on touchscreens, and how much cooler it would be if you had physical controls that would appear to accompany them~

Symphony Of Science: A Wave Of Reason~
This is the seventh installment in the auto-tuned Symphony of Science series, entitled A Wave of Reason. It's not my favorite in the series, but it's still far better than anything you'd see on MTV. Also, absolutely anything else, including whatever's on Lifetime. And that's saying a lot. You know, about menopause and stuff~

PCMag has a brief look at a couple of the hands-free controllers that pre-date the Kinect.
Decades before Microsoft would release its Kinect for Xbox 360 depth-sensing camera system, other companies tried to take the gamepad out of the gaming equation. On eBay: 1/2 Ton Of LEGO Bricks For $20K ~
" Now, let's cover what is here in this lot. Well, first of all every theme you could ask for. And pretty much every piece Lego has made. I spent years separating and organizing 1000's of lbs of Lego. I weighed everything in their containers and it all came to around 1158 lbs not including the metal cabinet with Lego instructions...So, I am guessing that you should have about 1000lbs of clean, sorted, organized and even partially baggied Lego. Of course I did have a few bins I never got to for sorting, I will leave that to you~
I stopped counting mini-figures at 2358. There are more here, I just got tired of counting~
I hate chewed on, broken, glued, dirty, nasty Lego and will immediately throw them away. And I have thoroughly gone through about 99% of what you see. I also am prejudice against other brands. The Latest In Cookie-Dipping Technology~
The Dipr Cookie Spoon was designed for dipping little cookie sandwiches (i.e. store-brand Oreos, you cheapskate!) in milk without them falling apart or sinking to the bottom of the glass. Why you can't just use a fork or spoon is beyond me, but I suspect it has something to do with your complete lack of motor skills (your mom says you got rammed in the head by a goat at the petting zoo). Honestly, I just always thought your parents were brother/sister. Family matters aside, the (lil) Dipr was invented by Bobby and Julie Haleluk, who are looking for $10K in funding to put the thing into production. They will not succeed. In his latest endeavour the 51-year-old airline pilot was taken to an altitude of 2,400m by a hot air balloon before jumping out and firing up his jet-pack~
He then flew for a few minutes to stabilise his wings, before flying two aerial loops and parachuting back to Earth 18 minutes later...
A statement on the Jetman.com website added: "This flight has been achieved with Yves Rossy's new wing, smaller (2 meters instead of 2.5 meters) and without unfoldable parts~
"This new prototype, designed by Yves and the RUAG Company, possesses a better aerodynamic profile and more stability~

Too Much: Man Dies After Taking Caffeine Equivalent Of 70 Energy Drinks~
A 23-year old British man died at a party after ingesting 70-energy drinks worth of caffeine powder. Being the life of the party: you did it wrong. Get it?! Because he died~
A statement on the caffeine's packaging says to not ingest more than 1/16 of a teaspoon, but according to testimony given at the inquest, the man swallowed spoonfuls of the caffeine -- the equivalent of 70 cans of energy drink. He became ill within a matter of minutes~
While police have said there were no suspicious circumstances and the deceased was not acting illegally, the local coroner criticized both the availability and labeling of the powdered caffeine:~
"Caffeine is so freely available on the internet for £3.29 [$5.27] but it's so lethal if taken in the wrong dose and here we see the consequence...
Who would take [one sixteenth of a teaspoon]? It's such a small dosage, the warning is so small on the front of it~
If you're sharing a bag, carrying it around and if you hadn't seen the warning - it could be that anyone at the party could have taken it. It's so dangerous to take something like this~"
Sharing a bag?!?! Hey bro -- wanna go halfsies on a bag of caff? "No, and you can't have any of my beer or weed either." You know, I guess all the caffeine really gave dude wings after all. Get it?! Because he's an angel. Now -- fetch my Little Sister, daddy needs a new plasmid~

Samurai Condoms for the Ultimate in Lady Spearing~
Kabuto stands for helmet, while samurai refers to the military nobility of pre-industrial Japan. Suffice it to say, the Kabuto Samurai Condom is a sexual helmet built only for noble men with passion in their hearts—and lots and lots of blood in their groins~
But though the condom is marketed mainly toward men, it’s available in a plethora of delicate stylings meant to capture the attention of any amorous female~
there’s the Minty Menthol condom laced in a cool and refreshing green color for a couple making love to a slow and sensual beat~
Then there’s the Tsubu pink condom, which according to Kanojo Toys “boasts 1350 nubs for the ultimate in lady spearing.” Mind you, what type of samurai would wear a pink helmet? I suppose perhaps it’s geared for homosexual samurais~
Last but not least is the entirely transparent Stamina condom supposedly designed to help a man last longer—though one wonders how the color of a condom can do that~

Fan-made Blade Runner chess-set~
click pic for full size version~
Rick Ross, A long time fan who had made items in homage to Blade Runner before, has been working on a chess set and table in the style of the one that was owned by J.F Sebastian in the film for the past 2 years. Recently he completed a crate for the set that is also in the spirit of the film. One of Rick's prototype sets also was purchased by Adam Savage last spring~
It is an amazing work of art since all the chess pieces were sculpted from scratch by Rick based on HD screen captures of the film, and a poor copy of the set sold in the UK. Interestingly I later found an original copy of the chess set myself after years of searching, but not until after Rick had finished his sculpts. It amazes me how close he got to the original, and how much character he gave it himself. It shows what a true artist this guy really is~

Details Finally Emerge On ThunderCats TV Reboot~
Details straight from producer Michael Jelenic about what fans can expect from a “reimagining” of the franchise~
“One thing is that I tried to simplify the mythology a little bit,” he said. “It’s a pretty complicated backstory that borrows from a lot of other sci-fi stuff, like Superman and Star Wars. In developing this, I wanted it to be a little more simple. In the other version, there’s something like three different planets involved, and they all converge onto one planet, and nobody’s really connected. I just wanted to bring that all together.”
“It’s reimagined in that way, but at the same time, we’re going to see the characters that we love,” he promised.
Asked specifically about the presence of classic characters Panthro, Cheetara, and Tygra, Jelenic said “all those characters will still be in it” —even Snarf, apparently.
“Everyone always wants to know about Snarf,” he laughed. “He will be in it, and he will not talk. Don’t worry.”
On the Snarf issue, I think muting him is a pretty good compromise. He’s got to be in there I suppose, but Ill be dammed if he wasn’t super annoying~
Still no word on an official air date, but the new era of ThunderCats is set to begin sometime in 2011~

Turn Your Workspace Into The Fortress Of Solitude~
While I highly doubt that the man behind this Superman Fortress of Solitude desk diorama will find a buyer on eBay for $450, you have to admire his commitment to geekiness~
Not a bad DIY project if you want to spruce up the cubicle a bit though. All you need is some tubing, a wooden base and some LEDs~
