Will we still use physical media in 10 years? Sony says yes~

Sony is fond of its proprietary media formats. The PlayStation 3 uses Sony's Blu-ray discs and the company's mobile offering, the PSP, uses its UMD cartridges (a "Universal Media Disc" that is anything but). The company's been at it ever since Betamax. According to Sony CEO Kaz Hirai, we're in for format wars aplenty if the company has its way~

Sony has said that it expects the PlayStation 3 to last 10 years — twice as long as the usual console and its understood five-year-long lifespan. That means the PlayStation 4 would land somewhere in 2016, making some folks wonder if the PS4 wouldn't go the way of the PSPgo, which eschewed the UMD cartridges for a download-only format~

Sony dashed all these wonders~

"We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn't as robust as one would hope," Hirai said. There's always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium. To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme."

Giant metal people deliver electricity to your house~

Most big public works projects get opposed by the people living near them. So one group of designers wants to fight NIMBY (not in my back yard) opposition by turning giant electricity pylons into huge human sculptures~

Created for an Icelandic design competition, The Land of Giants project takes the old mundane electricity transmission tower design, and alters it just enough to become a enormous human form whose arms are holding up the cables. Several different versions exist, turning a long and ugly transmission line into a sculpture park of unprecedented size~

Designed by the Massachusetts architecture firm Choi + Shine, the pylons won an honorable mention at the Icelandic High-Voltage Electrical Pylon International Design Competition, and won a Boston Society of Architects award for unbuilt architecture~

Japan’s Custom Motor Scooters: Colorful Noise or Art Form?~

Japan is a nation just as obsessed with subcultures as any other, bursting with creative inquiry and the need for personal and artistic expression. Hence, the Big Scooter phenomenon, transforming the concept of customization and pushing the glittery envelope beyond expected borders and further than ever before~

The bosozuku bike gangs (literally “violent running tribes”) have a reputation for reckless speeding and creating noisy havoc along Tokyo’s highways, although in recent years they transferred their colorful noise to Okinawa. The original gangs were known as Lightning Tribes (kaminari-zoku) and are associated more with the 1950s when the Japanese auto industry was a burgeoning empire~

Today these Japanese Big Scooter groups are pussycats; involved only in their scooters and how they can make them look better and increase their speed and endurance by using lightweight parts. They are an obsessed lot and into social networking. They even have their own Mixi group (the Japanese Facebook)which they utilize to arrange meetings where they can swap stories about ideas for new customizations~

The most popular scooters are by far the 250cc models. Low out-of-pocket costs and edgy designs as well as the fact that most weigh less than 400 pounds, give them a lightweight advantage over other motorbike classes~

If you should be traveling in Tokyo and come across any lone riders, do not be afraid to approach them for they relish questions about their bikes; it is the stuff they live for~

Their bikes are their “babies” and they love to talk about them and show them off~

'Skyline' Teaser : Aliens Are Invading Again~

Sure, we've fought aliens and their threatening blue beams before, but this time Will Smith's salary is too prohibitive for him to save us, and Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure has shown us we can't rest this burden entirely on Randy Quaid's shoulders. NOW WHAT? I guess we'll find out with Skyline, our latest here-come-the-aliens film. Touchscreens go mainstream for Tokyo vending machines~

Japan has a love affair with vending machines. You can get anything, from hot coffee to hot noodles to fresh fruit to cigarettes, from the ubiquitous machines. A new touchscreen machine called the aCure has just been installed in the bustling Shinagawa Station in Tokyo, and it's already been attracting a crowd. Featuring the huge slew of various beverages that salarymen are used to, it doesn't do anything particularly novel. But it sure looks awesome, and it's flashy. And you know what? Scott Pilgrim Interactive Trailer Reinvents Film Promotion~

In a lot of stylistic ways, it looks like Scott Pilgrim is going to be a completely original film. So why restrict that to the movie itself? The people behind Pilgrim have released an interactive trailer that’s full of new jokes, clips, and tons of behind-the-scenes information. It can be a little intense to manage, since there are so many bonus features in its, so here’s my recommendation~

If you’ve never seen this trailer before, watch it in full once through without clicking. Then, go through and click every time something pops up, then instantly pause the trailer so you can read it and click on any links in it without getting ahead of yourself (even if you chose to unlock them all after the first play-through). It may seem like an overly choppy experience, but so many of the hidden tidbits are worthwhile that you can’t risk skipping any. You’ll also want to pause to scroll over all the evil exes when they appear on screen together~
