Japan Earthquake: How to Donate~

For those who have seen the shocking images, videos and reports coming out of Japan in the aftermath the devastating earthquake and tsunami, some of you might want to do something for the Japanese folks in addition to writing a sympathetic Facebook status update or Tweet~

There are various forms of cellphone donation and web forms that have been popping up but before you start donating, there are some pointers that you might want to consider:
  1. be wary of charities you haven not heard of and stick to the big names
  2. make sure you are donating to a legit non-profit organisation
  3. you can check the legitimacy of the charity organisation via watchdogs such as Charity Watch
  4. give directly to a charity instead of any groups that solicits contribution on the charity behalf
For those that wishes to do their little part for Japan, here are a couple of options: American Red Cross, Salvation Army USA, World Vision, Global Giving, and Mercy Corps~
