Local news struggles to comprehend Mikunopolis~
So! Mikunopolis happened, and it was awesome. Besides being awesome, it happened in America, where Miku isn't as big...yet. Therefore, it was only natural that local news outlets pick it up, to fill in their mandatory "human interest" block. Or in this case, Vocaloid interest~
Such was the case with KTLA, which performed a decent enough job of highlighting this strange Japanese cultural curio. Like most mainstream news coverage it still suffers from some of the misconceptions about why Vocaloids are a thing, but Miku's label as a "virtual diva" is as good a shorthand as any. At least they didn't make any jokes about robot overlords or somesuch~

Japan Earthquake: How to Donate~
For those who have seen the shocking images, videos and reports coming out of Japan in the aftermath the devastating earthquake and tsunami, some of you might want to do something for the Japanese folks in addition to writing a sympathetic Facebook status update or Tweet~
There are various forms of cellphone donation and web forms that have been popping up but before you start donating, there are some pointers that you might want to consider:
- be wary of charities you haven not heard of and stick to the big names
- make sure you are donating to a legit non-profit organisation
- you can check the legitimacy of the charity organisation via watchdogs such as Charity Watch
- give directly to a charity instead of any groups that solicits contribution on the charity behalf

The manga was first published in the February issue of Kadokawa’s Shounen Ace magazine in Dec 1994. While the manga has been running for very long, only 12 volumes were released because Sadamoto took long breaks in between~

Muhammad Ali Sculpture makes up of 1,300 speed bags~
"using 1,300 punching bags, 6.5 miles of stainless steel cable, and 2,500 pounds of aluminum pipe to construct a 22-foot-high installation that took three years to complete" By artist Michael Kalish~
"The idea for the project came to Kalish as he was falling asleep one night in 2008: an array of custom-made, teardrop-shaped speed bags suspended in midair that, from just one vantage point, align themselves like pixels into an image of Ali's face."~

Pogo does LOTR~
This is a song by mixologist Pogo called 'Murmurs from Middle Earth' created entirely out of chords and vocal samples from the movies. I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty catchy in a 'damn I just wanna shake my ass!' kinda way~

Star Blazers set to air on SyFy in April ~
Woohoo! Seems the SyFy channel just keeps adding more anime to their lineup, and who can complain about that? The original Star Blazers will begin airing on the SyFy channel as of April 21 (a Thursday, which is where all of SyFy's anime will be moving from their original Monday airings.)~
The series originally aired in the U.S. from 1979 to 1984, with a total of 77 episodes, so now is the perfect time to go back and relive the series (or experience it for the first time!) For those of you who don't know, Star Blazers is set in a sort of post-apocalyptic future where alien bombings have ruined the Earth and all those still living are underground. However, radiation has begun leaking deeper and deeper from the bombings so the Space Cruiser Argo is sent out to retrieve advanced technology from the planet Iscandar in order to save what's left of Earth, and they only have one year to do it!~
